How to switch between Notes 8 "Eclipse" and Notes 8 Basic Client quickly

Thursday 20th September, 2007
For those of you just getting around to installing the Notes 8 Client, you will need to ask yourself do I install the Notes 8 Client running on the Eclipse Framework or do I install the "Basic" Notes 8 Client which has no Eclipse Framework.  If your wondering how much bigger the Eclipse Notes 8 Client is, here are some quick metrics to consider.

Size of Install Package Notes 8 Eclipse:  450megs
Size of Install Package Notes 8 Basic:  184 megs
Time to Launch Notes 8 Eclipse:   10+ seconds
Time to Launch Notes 8 Basic:  2 seconds
(Time measurements based on Thinkpad T60p w/ 2Gig RAM)

Now back to the original question.  If you install the Notes 8 Client running on the Eclipse Framework, you will notice the shortcut points to "notes.exe".  Well, in the past, people would create their own shortcut and point it to "nlnotes.exe" so they could bypass the Splash screen and save some time on startup.

If you create a shortcut that uses the "nlnotes.exe" in Notes 8, you not only bypass the Splash screen, you also bypass the Eclipse Framework.

Now I keep both shortcuts on my desktop so I can quickly switch between them during a demo or switch to the Basic Notes 8 Client when running memory resource intensive applications like Virtualization Software.

Is there a switch on the Notes 8 Eclipse so that the splash screen does not appear?

Craig, I don't know of any other switches that are available to remove just the splash screen. As for the option of using nlnotes, here's a technote I came across. Someone mentioned that doing this will break MAPI functionaility so if you find something that doesn't work be sure to test using notes.exe.

So, it seems that you can switch back and forth between FAT Notes and Notes Basic. I to have a similar ThinkPad T60p, and was having performance issues with Notes 8. What you need to do is launch nlnotes.exe (in my case c:\notes\nlnotes.exe) as opposed to notes.exe, which should be in the same directory. I reads the same data as FAT Notes. Pretty cool. No Java and no Eclipse!! Just fast Notes. Don't think I'd ever go back to FAT Notes unless it was the ONLY thing running on my machine.

In 8.0.2 a new INI parameter was introduced so you could install the Notes "Eclipse" client and then force it to load the basic client without Eclipse. UseBasicNotes=1. Then using policies or script, you can change the parameter from 1 to 0.

How do you enter the UseBasicNotes=1 ini parameter? I support Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.1 Professional in a large organisation. We cannot dictate directly into notes 8 unless we launch the nlnotes.exe file. Dragon does not like the eclipse framework at all.
